Herod I - 8 prutot (dated year 3 = either 40BC or 37BC)Hendin-486 / 1169 (01)
7.76 grams

The dating of these coins is subject to debate. Some say that because Herod was appointed Tetrarch of Samaria by Marc Antony in 42BC, that "year 3" would correspond to 40/39BC. Others feel that because Herod was appointed King of Judaea by the Roman Senate in 40BC, that "year three" should then represent 37BC. In all reality, the debate will most likely never be settled conclusively, one way or the other.

This type was struck probably soon after the death of Arcadius. The uncharacteristically warlike effigy of Honorius may bee seen as a response to the threat posed by the usurpation of Constantine III and the mutinous state of the army. He is bearded, perhaps in mourning for his brother Arcadius. (RIC X)

RIC 271 Domitian as Caesar [Titus]AR Denarius, 2.74g
Rome Mint, 80 AD
Obv: CAESAR DIVI F DOMITIANVS COS VII; Head of Domitian, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS; Square seat, draped with cloth hanging in folds, with tassels: on it, crested Corinthian helmet
RIC 271 (C2). BMC 98. RSC 399a. BNC 79.
Acquired from Et Tu Antiquities, November 2007.

Domitian as Caesar issued this denarius under Titus in 80 AD. The reverse is part of the pulvinaria series which commemorates the opening of the Colosseum in 80 AD.

Pulvinaria were sacred couches of the gods which had symbolic attributes set upon them. In this case, the Corinthian helmet and table are attributes of Minerva, the patron goddess of Domitian.

A wonderful denarius with a good portrait in a fine style.

Furia Sabinia Tranquillina was the wife of Gordian III. She survived her murdered husband, but her subsequent lot in life and the period of her death remain equally without record.
This coin from Deultum presents the only affordable way for a collector to obtain a coin of Tranquillina with Latin legends, without needing to spend a fortune for an antoninianus.

The edges of the coin appear filed/rasped/ground, with parallel scour marks, flat fields, and usually a prominent ridge all around the circumference of the coin. To me it would suggest "filing" after manufacture.
The coin has virtually no wear, and a dark, almost black patina.
