RIC 1373 VespasianAR Denarius, 3.01g
Uncertain mint, 69-71 AD
Obv: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r.
Rev: MARS VLTOR; Mars adv. r., with spear and trophy
RIC 1373 (R3, this coin), BMC -. BNC -. RSC -.
Ex Harlan J Berk BBS 224, 14 September 2023, lot 107. Ex Curtis Clay collection. Ex CNG, MBS 43, 24 September 1997, lot 863.
In late October 69 the Second Battle of Cremona was fought between the legions of Vitellius and Vespasian. It resulted in the utter defeat of the Vitellian side and their slow retreat towards Rome. Not long afterwards the Spanish legions went openly for Vespasian, which up until that point had only been neutrally friendly toward him. Coins were quickly struck for Vespasian in the newly won province. Most of these are attributed to Tarraco and an unknown Spanish mint. Intriguingly, a small military issue was contemporaneously struck at an uncertain mint somewhere in the western empire - Mattingly thought perhaps Aquileia. The issue contains some stylistic affinities with the Spanish series, but more importantly, recent metal analysis by K. Butcher and M. Ponting show the silver content is almost identical to that of the Spanish coins. It is very likely these early military denarii were also struck in Spain in late 69 soon after the province went over to Vespasian. This unique Mars type with an unusual vertical obverse legend displays the typical portrait style of this rare military issue - small portrait with upward gaze in somewhat crude style. These denarii were likely struck in haste during the turmoil of late 69/early 70 as propaganda pieces by the pro-Flavian factions in the region. This specimen is the RIC reference coin, though not pictured in the plates.David Atherton08/02/23 at 02:38Jay GT4: An important historical type, Great coin!

Olympia, Elis AR Obol, Hera & Eagle (BCD Olympia 126 = HGC 472) Photo Credit: Elsen [LINK].

Obv: Head of Hera or the nymph Olympia to right.
Rev: F / A (to l. & r.). Eagle w/ closed wings standing right.

Mar Bar (1921-2015) Collection (Elsen 155 (16 Jun 2023), Lot 140 [LINK]).
Notes: I’m not sure of the significance of this disagreement, but Oliver Hoover (HGC) identifies the obverse figure as Hera; Alan S. Walker (BCD Olympia) calls her “the eponymous nymph Olympia” (both describing this specimen).
ASW comments (p. 63) that he IDs those wearing a stephane as Hera, those without (hair in rolls) as Olympia. Importantly, there is an AR Stater w/ a Zeus obv. & the nymph on the rev. (BCD Olympia 118 [LINK], pp. 52-3), along w/ a rev. inscribed OΛYMΠIA, apparently naming her. ASW writes: "Both the legend and the lack of the stephane prove that she's not Hera: she reappears, in a more mature and commanding way, on the contemporary issues of the Hera mint (see below, lots 122-127)" [i.e., including my coin, 126].Curtis JJ08/01/23 at 18:01Bruno V: Very interesting, thank you!

BCC MA46 Nemesis Bronze FigurineBronze Figurine of Nemesis
Roman 1st-early 3rd Century CE
Solid cast bronze statuette of Nemesis,
wearing stephane and long chiton?, right
hand clasped to drapery at neck, head
facing downward, both arms bare. In her
left hand she cradles the cubit measure.
There are no obvious seam lines. The
bottom footing is flat, allowing the figure
to stand alone. A similar representation of
Nemesis may be found on provincial coins of
Julia Domna, 194-217 CE, minted in the nearby
Roman colony of Aelia Capitolina (Meshorer 83).
Matsson's Gods, Goddesses and Heroes notes
that the original sense of Nemesis was not so
much revenge as the "distributor of fortune -
it might be either good or bad fortune" and
that she "apportioned to each man according
to his deserts."

Unofficial mint, after 80 AD
Obv: IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG PM; Head of Titus, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS; Goat standing l., in laurel-wreath.
Cf. RIC 100-132/267 (for obv./rev.).
Ex Harlan J Berk BBS 224, 14 September 2023, lot 95. Ex Curtis Clay Collection, acquired from Lanz, eBay, 7 December 2019.
An unoffical mule featuring a Titus obverse paired with a reverse intended for Domitian Caesar. The type of a goat within laurel wreath was exclusively struck for Domitian Caesar under Titus and may represent Amalthea, the Cretan goat, which nursed the infant Jupiter. It copies a reverse type originally coined during the Roman Republic. Despite the piece being plated, the style is good for the issue. Possibly transfer dies?
Significantly, the Paris collection possesses a fourrée mule of the same type (BNC 115), however, it is in poor style from different dies. David Atherton07/28/23 at 11:32Jay GT4: Great rarity! You're on a roll

A most remarkable error denarius! Here we have a Domitian Caesar reverse legend PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS mistakenly given to a Titus Caesar Venus type by the engraver. The correct legend should read TR POT VIII COS VII. Perhaps the Venus reverse was confused with the Salus/column type (RIC 1084) struck for Domitian Caesar from the same issue? Furthermore, Domitian's COS VI issue with the reverse legend PRINCEPS IVVENTVTIS is dated to 79 and could either have been struck under Vespasian before his death in June or by Titus afterwards. The existence of this Titus Caesar error coin proves at least some of Domitian's COS VI coinage was produced under Vespasian (see RIC II p. 31). Extremely rare, possibly the third known specimen.

Notes: A scarce type (w/ many rare sub-types), very rare before the BCD Coll. was dispersed, many of which likely came from the CH8.132, Phalanna 1991 Hoard, which may correspond to his tickets for coins "ex. Thess." c. "1991" (perhaps the hoard report came from Lorber via BCD?).
The fragmentary ΛΟ (from ΠΕΛΟΡΙΣ) is actually a substantial obv. inscription for these. Most have no obv. legend; it seems to never be complete. RIC 0453 Titus as Caesar [Vespasian]Æ As, 10.52g
Rome mint, 72 AD
Obv: T CAES VESPASIAN IMP P TR P COS II; Head of Titus, laureate, bearded, r.
Rev: VICTORIA AVGVSTI; S C in field; Victory adv. r. to place wreath on standard and holding palm
RIC 453 (R). BMC 645. BNC 636.
Ex Heritage, Auction #232326, 5 July 2023, lot 65138. Formerly in NGC holder #2119689-009, grade F.
A fairly rare Titus Caesar as from 72 featuring Victory with standard on the reverse. One could plausibly argue this is a 'Judaea Capta' type. I decline to categorise it as such based on the generic nature of the design and the lack of a captive. It is too ambiguous for a decisive answer. Hendin does not include the variety in his Guide to Biblical coins.

Coin found in Hampshire, England. Old repair
EPATICCUS
Epaticcus was a son of Tasciovanus, and probably the younger brother of Cunobelin, he was also apparently a favoured uncle of Caratacus. It is from his coinage issues that we know his name and his family relationship.
The distribution of his coinage would indicate that Epaticcus expanded the territory of his tribe at the expense of the Atrebatean king Verica, and installed himself at the latter's capital, Calleva around 25 CE.
It is likely that Epaticcus was permitted to govern the area by his brother as part of the Catuvellaunian hegemony that was expanding across south eastern Britain at the time. Epaticcus continued to take Verica’s lands to west and south until his death, probably on campaign, around 35 CE. After this his expansionist policies were continued by his nephews, Caratacus and Togodumnus, into the late 30’s CE.
ATREBATES
The Atrebates were a Belgic Iron Age tribe originally dwelling in the Artois region of Northern France.
After the tribes of Gallia Belgic were defeated by Caesar in 57 BC, 4,000 Atrebates participated in the Battle of Alesia in 53, led by their chief Commius.
Before 54 BC, an offshoot of the Gallic tribe probably settled in Britain where it was successively ruled by kings Commius, Tincommius, Eppillus and Verica. Their territory comprised modern Hampshire, West Sussex and Berkshire, centred on the capital Calleva Atrebatum (modern Silchester). They were bordered to the north by the Dobunni and Catuvellauni; to the east by the Regni; and to the south by the Belgae.
The settlement of the Atrebates in Britain does not seem to have been a mass population movement and it is possible that the name "Atrebates", as with many "tribal" names in this period, referred only to the ruling house or dynasty and not to an ethnic group.
After the Roman conquest the Atrebates' lands were organized into the civitates of the Atrebates, Regni and possibly, the Belgae.

Notes: Although hounds were also popular on Greek coinage, Roman Republican denarii provide more varied depictions of the breeds and contexts of dogs in their society. This issue is notable for illustrating what might be described today as a “lion cut,” popular for poodles and other water dogs.
This dog has been identified as a proto-poodle, or water spaniel of some sort – a working dog. The “lion cut” permits buoyancy and warmth as the dog retrieves fowl from water. A similar breed, similarly groomed, is portrayed by Caesius (Cr. 298/1), but in a distinctly domestic setting, hinting that, already in antiquity, canine coiffure may have been as much about fashion as function.Curtis JJ07/22/23 at 15:11Serendipity: Amazing water spaniel with lion cut!

ASW writes: "Both the legend and the lack of the stephane prove that she's not Hera: she reappears, in a more mature and commanding way, on the contemporary issues of the Hera mint (see below, lots 122-127)" [i.e., including my coin, 126].Curtis JJ07/22/23 at 05:03Virgil H: Very nice and interesting writeup

From "Coinage in the Roman Provinces Conference"

In 64/3 BC Roman troops under Pompey liberated the Greek cities in Judaea conquered by Alexander Jannaeus. Pompey personally supervised the reconstruction of Gadara. In commemoration of this event the people of Gadara established the year 64/3 BC as the beginning of a new era for their history, in substitution for the Seleukid era.
Seyrig and Spijkerman attributed this type to the city of Gadara in the Decapolis, however, Kushnir-Stein, followed by Kindler and Meshorer, rejected that based on style, flan manufacture, and find locations. Most of the coins of this type have been found in Lebanon leading Meshorer to place them in the Iturean section of Sofaer, however, they lack the typical monograms and legends found on other Iturean coins leaving their exact origin still unknown. Kindler did not include this variant in his typology of Iturean coinage.Jay GT407/22/23 at 04:51Virgil H: Fascinating writeup

A. Overstrike: Bar Kochba AE over Flavian AE, Hendin Plate CoinPhoto Credit: NYS (edited).
Judaea, Bar Kochba Rebellion AE Middle Bronze (25mm, 9.88 g, 6h; undertype Agrippa II – Titus [87/8 CE]), 133/4 CE.
Obv: 'Sma' (abbreviating Simon; Paleo-Hebrew). Seven-branched palm tree, two bunches of dates.
Rev: 'Year two of the redemption of Israel' (Paleo-Hebrew). Grape vine leaf on tendril. Undertype portrait of Titus visible.
Ref: Hendin GBC2, 160a (this coin illustrated).
Prov: Ex David Hendin Collection (w/ his tag), Goldberg Sale 21 (15-17 2003, Pre-Long Beach Auction), Lot 1607; CNG e-538 (10 May 2023), Lot 244.
Also: NY Sale 48 (14 Jan 2020), Lot 90; Goldberg 116 (2 Jun 2020), Lot 894; CNG e-486 (24 Feb 2021), Lot 245; NY Sale 54 (11 Jan 2022), Lot 105.
Notes: A fascinating overstrike with visible Flavian bust, probably a “Judaea Capta” issue of Agrippa II struck in Caesarea Paneas, 75/6 CE. In my opinion, the undertype is RPC II 2285 & the bust of Titus is a die match to ex. 7 (ex Galst).Curtis JJ07/21/23 at 22:16Jay GT4: This is a great overstrike

Alexander III AV Stater (Pregnant Nike?)Greek (Hellenistic). Kings of Macedon, Alexander III "The Great" (336-323 BCE) AV Stater (19mm, 8.48g, ~12h). Uncertain mint (Salamis?), struck c. 325-310 BCE.
Obv: Head of Athena right wearing Corinthian helmet with crest.
Rev: ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ / ΗΔΟ. Nike standing l. holding wreath in r. hand, stylis in l. Eagle below l., monogram r.
Ref: Price 797 (Uncertain Greek/Macedon); Müller 184 (Aphytis).
Prov: Ex-Morton & Eden Auction 104, Lot 44 (London at Sotheby's, 14 Nov 2019)
Notes: Based on the eagle I would lean toward Salamis, but there's little evidence one way or the other. As Reid Goldsborough aptly noted, "Nike is typically svelte, but on some varieties she looks as if she could be pregnant (see Price 797)"![LINK].Curtis JJ07/21/23 at 10:37*Alex: Superb coin.

RIC VIII Arles 167
This Magnentius is from the collection of Daniel Turner (1794- 1850) who was a War of 1812 veteran. At the age of 14, Turner started his Navy career. In 1813, he was promoted to Lieutenant and joined Oliver Perry’s squadron and commanded the brig Caledonia in the Battle of Lake Erie. On September 10, 1813, Turner’s suppressive fire for Perry's flagship Lawrence was so impressive and effective, that he earned a Congressional medal and a sword from the State of New York. He eventually commanded the USS Constitution in 1839 and served in the Navy until his sudden death in 1850. His collection, which included 292 Ancient Greek, Roman, medieval, and Islamic coins, stayed in his family until it was sold at auction in 2015.

The mintmark SPAR, coincidentally, is also a Navy term for a pole used to support the sail or a type of deck-- spar deck.

RPC 1656 Domitian as Caesar [Vespasian]AR Drachm, 2.94g
Caesarea (Cappadocia) mint, 76-77 AD
Obv: ΔΟΜΙΤΙΑΝΟϹ ΚΑΙϹΑΡ ϹƐΒΑϹΤΟΥ ΥΙΟϹ; Head of Domitian, laureate, r.
Rev: ƐΥΘΗΝΙΑ ϹƐΒΑϹΤΗ ƐΤ Θ; Eutheria/Abundantia std., r., holding two corn-ears in r. hand
RPC 1656 (3 spec.).
Acquired from David Connors, June 2023
Vespasian's Cappadocian silver issues were struck in two distinct styles: Roman (six o'clock die axis) and 'local' (twelve o'clock die axis). Unsurprisingly, the Roman style coins were struck at Rome and sent to Cappadocia to help supplement the locally produced pieces. The majority of Cappadocia's silver coins were struck locally, very likely in Caesarea. Whether 'Roman' or 'local', all Cappadocian silver was produced at nearly 50% fineness. This rare drachm struck for Domitian Caesar in 'local' style features Eutheria the goddess or personified spirit (daimona) of prosperity and abundance.David Atherton07/19/23 at 19:22Jay GT4: Great Eastern portrait
