RIC: 500 var.

Very interesting, erroneous obverse legend: Virtvs Probi AG insted of Virtvs Probi AVG(vsti) !

ONLY 2nd KNOWN SPECIMEN TO ME (THE OTHER BEING IN C.OLIVA COLLECTION - SEE CON NO. 317 ON PROBUSCOINS.FR; same obverse die as on my example)

IMP PRBVS P F AVG (SIC!) UNICUM OBVERSE: IMP PRBVS P F AVG (SIC!)
REVERSE: SPES AVG
BUST TYPE: B = radiate, cuirassed bust right
FIELD / EXERGUE MARKS: -/-//XXIVI
WEIGHT 3.60g / AXIS: 6h / DIAMETER: 21-22mm

ALFOLDI 084/- (UNLISTED WITH ERRONEOUS LEGEND)
COLLECTION NO. 21

UNICUM!

Ex Numismatic Lanz auction 153 lot 568

NOTE: Apparently it is only the second known example of such a spectacular error in Probus' name as PRBVS (the second example is in M. Vosper's collection; though with officina mark "VI" in the field and not in the exergue like on my example).

A coin of the highest numismatic interest!

1351~0.jpg
POBVS INSTEAD OF PROBVS !!! OBVERSE: IMP C M AVR POBVS P F AVG (sic!)
REVERSE: SOLI INVICTO
BUST TYPE: H2 = Radiate bust left in imperial mantle (toga picta and tunica palmata), holding eagle-tipped sceptre (scipio)
MINT: Serdica
FIELD / EXERGUE MARKS: -/-//A
WEIGHT 3.75g / DIAMETER: 22 mm
RIC 861 var. (unlisted with A only in exergue)
COLLECTION NO. 1351

Note: A coin with a spectacular error in the obverse legend: POBVS (instead of PROBVS). Not only is this the only example of this specific type known to me, but it is - to my knowledge - the only example of such an error in Emperor's name in the whole coinage of Probus.

The coin is part of the very rare and brief A-Delta (without the KA mintmark) first phase of Serdica's 3rd emmission unlisted by RIC as well as by Pink. Although the exergue is barely legible, under a magnifying glass I see an "A" there rather than a Delta. Nevertheless I will have the coin cleaned which hopefully will make the exergue more legible.

Unique and of the highest numismatic interest. The coin joins another interesting unicum with an erroneous obverse legend in my collection: PRBVS instead of PROBVS - see my coin no. 21 from Siscia.

IMP C M AVR P PROBVS AVG (SIC!) UNIQUE ! OBVERSE: IMP C M AVR P PROBVS AVG (SIC!)
REVERSE: CLEMENTIA TEMP
BUST TYPE: A2 = Radiate, cuirassed and draped bust right, seen from back
FIELD / EXERGUE MARKS: B//XXI
WEIGHT 3.60g
RIC 921 VAR. (unlisted with IMP C M AVR P PROBVS AVG obverse legend)
COLLECTION NO. 1219

NOTE: unpublished and atypical obverse legend - most likely an engraver's error. This is the only example of this legend known to me. Probably unique !

1338~0.jpg
BONO IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG (SIC!) OBVERSE: BONO IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG (SIC!)
REVERSE: SOLI INVICTO
BUST TYPE: A2
FIELD / EXERGUE MARKS: -/-//KAB
WEIGHT 4.54g / AXIS: 12h / WIDTH 22,5-23,5 mm
RIC 868 var. (unlisted with this obverse legend)
COLLECTION NO. 1338

Extremely rare and erroneous obverse legend (should be BONO ... PROBO and not PROBVS)

ONLY 2ND Specimen known to me (the other being CNG 225/553 (P.ZANCHI)); see also: P. Zanchi, Quelques nouveaux antoniniens de Serdica, Schweizer Münzblätter 30 (1980), 95-100, Fig. 8.)

EXTREMELY RARE

Very rare erroneous reverse leged: RESTITVTHOR instead of RESTITVTOR ORBIS

The only example of this exact type known to me (and only second example with the erroneous reverse legend RESTITVTHOR ORBIS - the other with different bust and obverse legend being in Ph. Gysen collection - see coin no. 939 on probuscoins.fr)

THIS COIN IS PART OF THE CODED EQVITI SERIES (SECOND LETTER "I")

Extremely rare and interesting spelling error: SECVRIT ERP (sic!) instead of SECVRIT[as] PERP[etva]. Only the second example of this error known to me (the other being in O. Guyonnet collection)!
