Roman Empire, Vespasian, unpublished variant of RIC 1497 and RPC II 1470Description: Vespasian medium bronze, 11,1g, 30mm, 6h
Obv.: IMP CAESAR VESPASIAN AVGVST, laureate head right
Rev.: PONT MAX TR POT P P.COS.VIII.CENS (around) S C (field), Ceres, veiled, standing left with two corn ears and cornucopiae.
RIC 1497 (not Roman mint, possibly Ephesus, AD 77-78) var. (obv. legend ends in AVGVST (B-type) not AVGVSTVS (A-type)). The coin as a B-type is probably unpublished so far in combination with this reverse.
RIC 1497 matches with RPC II 1470 and was R3 (only one known). The recent RPC S3 Supplement reports of another example found in Athens during excavations (To Mouseio kai è anaskaphè. Eurèmata apo ton chôro anegersès tou neou mouseiou tès Akropolès (Athens, 2006), p. 45, n° 90.)

Roman Empire, VESPASIAN, AE Dupondius.Æ Dupondius (13.2g, Ø22mm, 7h). Rome mint. Struck AD 74.
Obv.: IMP CAESAR VESPASIANVS AVG, laureate head left
Rev.: TR·POT·COS III·CENSOR, winged caduceus between two crossed cornucopiae
obv.: RIC 759 x rev.:RIC 761/2 (near RIC 760 (R2))
ex G.Henzen

This is an unlisted mule with the obverse corresponding to RIC 759 (Vespasian) and reverse corresponding to RIC 761-762 (Titus). RIC 760 is also a mule using the same Titus reverse, but with obverse legend VESPASIAN (RIC 757), not VESPASIANVS like this one. Belongs to issues associated with bronzes of smaller denominations minted for Syria.

Roman Empire, Vespasian BMCRE unlisted Quadriga Rome mintBMCRE pg. 14 note, RSC 643v.
Rome mint, 72-73 A.D.
Obv - Head of Vespasian, laureate, r.
Rev - No legend. Vespasian laureate, standing in triumphal quadriga r., horses pacing, holding branch in r. hand and sceptre in l.
VF

This reverse celebrates Vespasian and Titus' Judaean Triumph at Rome.

Most examples of this reverse type are Antioch mint issues which copy the Rome mint type.

This example is unusual because of the obverse legend IMP CAES VESP AVG PM. RIC and RSC only record this reverse with COS IIII added to the end of the legend. BMCRE does not have either one listed but has a note for the COS IIII type.

This example is a rare official variant which Ian Carradice knows of only three other specimens.

This is a variant of RIC 401 with Bust type C. The full seplling of the reverse legend is not noted by RIC but is noted by Pink.
The portrait of this coin is also an early one, which is based on Tacitus/Florian and places the coin to very early in the second emission, later coins in this emission have a more Probus like portrait.

This Bust type is not listed in RIC. Also this coin is undoubtedly of the style of Serdica but the emission mark does not match that of any published emission mark for Serdica. There is growing evidence of an unlisted second series of mintmarks used during the third emission of Serdica using Greek letters that ran in parallel to the Roman equivalent.

"Lucilla, AE As. 9.97g; 26mm. 164-166 AD. Obv: LVCILLAE AVG ANTONINI AVG F, draped bust right. Rev: unclear legend, Venus standing right, holding apple and sceptre, S-C across fields. cf. RIC 1770; Cohen 80. This is the only Lucilla coin in RIC which has a deity standing right holding a sceptre (there is a Diana holding a torch with both hands). The legend seems to contain ..IT or AT.. and ends in A, but there are no coins in RIC which have such a legend. This coin is almost identical to one sold by Noble Coins Australia with the same description, though that one was a dupondius)"

Note by Johny SYSEL: "It could be mule combining Lucilla obverse with Faustna II reverse. But definitely there is Laetitia on reverse not Venus."

Note by Curtis Clay: "I think Johny S is right: a mule with a LAETITIA reverse die meant for Faustina II. Rome mint mules are rare. This one might help to establish the chronology of Lucilla's and Faustina's respective coinages."

POSSIBLY UNIQUE

Apparently this arrangement of the rev. legend is rare: usually it's COS II in exergue and S - C in field. Of seven specimens in the British Museum, only one has the arrangement like this one, with COS II in circular legend and SC in exergue.

That BM coin, no. 862, has a cuirassed bust like this, but head laureate rather than bare.

THIS COIN IS CERTAINLY UNPUBLISHED, IF NOT UNIQUE.

Roman Empire, Licinius I. AE3This is a very nice example of an AE3 reduced follis for Licinius I, from the mint at Arelate, officina (workshop) 1

Obv inscr: IMP LICINVS P F AVG. The bust of the emperor is wearing a laurel wreath and a cuirass, so it is a B5 class bust. This example is a bit special because the name of the emperor is misspelled.

Rev.: SOLI INVICTO COMITI, with C and S in the two fields r and L, and PARL in the exergue, which is the mint mark for Arelate officina P (for Prima = first) (as I mentioned above).

The coin is a variant of a coin listed in the standard reference Roman Imperial Coinage, vol VII, as #155 for the mint at Arelate (ancient Arles, France). Because of the misspelling this coin is not actually listed, and the "normal" version is rated as an R4.

Roman Empire, Julian II, AE3, ConstantinopleClosest match is RIC 160. This coin is now published on both Wildwinds.com and the dirtyoldcoins website. This coin is "barely" published as the other example had the exergue broken off of it and the mint was assumed Cyzicus..until now...as my coins shows...it is Constantinople.

Strack p. 219, 41 (Vienna) = RSC 883b.

Vienna also has a similar denarius with bust laureate, draped r.

These are mules from an old rev. die: the lack of P P in the obverse legend means that it should have been added to the rev. legend, but these coins are from one or more rev. dies that had been engraved before that change was made, and were later erroneously coupled with at least two of the new obv. dies without P P.

Weight 1.59g

Possibly connected with other material of this period such as the sestertii with GENIVS P R busts. Possibly a trial for an issue that was never, for some reason, actually struck in any numbers. The reverse type and legend are taken from issues of Septimius Severus several decades earlier

"Other examples of this rare bust type on Milan coins of the same issue: Göbl pl. 82, 1034u (rev. MARTI PACIFE, P in l. field); pl. 84, 1044u (rev. VIRTVS AVGG, Hercules stg. l. holding branch, club, and lionskin). Neither ill. spec. is from the same obv. die as your coin.
Other AVGG coins of the same issue at Milan: pl. 84, 1044u, just cited; 1045o (apparently from the same VIRTVS AVGG rev. die, different sort of armored obv. die). Pl. 72, 937z (ADVENTVS AVGG Emp. on horseback, obv. of Saloninus as Caesar). Pl. 71, 929r (bronze medallion, ADLOCVTIO AVGG Emp. and two attendants on platform addressing troops)." Markus Weder knows of just one other specimen of my coin, ex Gibraltar hoard, it is in his own collection.

Not listed in RIC nor Cohen. Curtis Clay confirms that this is a new variety, giving the following additional information: "The obv. die is Kraay's A88, Aes of Galba pl. VII, known to him with rev. Victory holding Palladium, one spec., Paris = Giard 173, pl. XII = RIC 353. That's the only obv. die Kraay or RIC knew with this exact obv. legend and the laureate, draped bust. ... This LIBERTAS PVBLICA rev. die was apparently unknown to Kraay in any combination."

Rev.: FECVND AVGVSTA (around) S C (in field), Fecunditas standing left, holding a child in her arms, two more standing left and right of her raising their right hands.
RIC (Aurelius) unlisted, legend corresponds to RIC 1635 and the representation to RIC 1649
ex Aeternitas Coins & Antiquities (via VCoins)

This type refers to the growing family of Marcus Aurelius and Faustina Jr. The three girls represent the three surviving children (of a total of 7 born) around end of 159 to early 160: Annia Galeria Aurelia Faustina (age 14), Lucilla (12) and Fadilla (1).

Additional information provided by Curtis Clay (19 july 2012): "This type commemorating the birth of a third survivng daughter usually has the legend IVNONI LVCINAE, whereas the type FECVND AVGVSTAE commemorates the birth of the next daughter about a year or so later and shows Fecunditas/Faustina holding two children in her arms while two more stand at her feet.

Strack 1335 knew a sestertius like yours in only one specimen, in Naples, but unfortunately does not illustrate the coin.

The Naples collection was stolen in 1977. Your coin is of nice quality, and has an old-collection look, lightly cleaned on the reverse. I would not be at all surprised if it is the actual Naples coin! ..."

Elagabalus_Possibly_Unique~0.jpg
Roman Empire, Elagabalus, 16 May 218 - 11 March 222 A.D. Silver denariusPossibly unique! The combination of this reverse legend with a recumbent bull behind the altar is apparently unpublished and this is the only example known to Forum. The bull is present on a similar type with the reverse legend INVICTVS SACERDOS AVG.

Silver denarius, RSC III 213c var. (no bull); BMCRE V 269 var. (same); Hunter III 68 var. (same); RIC IV 52 (S) var. (same, also no horn); SRCV II 7538 var. (same), NGC XF, strike 5/5, surface 3/5 (2412840-011), Rome mint, weight 3.07g, maximum diameter 18.4mm, die axis 0o, Jan 222 A.D.; obverse IMP ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, horned, laureate, draped and bearded bust right, from the front; reverse P M TR P V COS IIII P P, Elagabalus standing slightly left, wearing Syrian priestly dress, sacrificing from patera in right hand over flaming altar at feet on left, club (or branch) cradled in left hand and arm, star in upper left field, recumbent bull behind altar; NGC certified (slabbed); extremely rare.

Coins with a horned portrait and the title TR P V were struck in January 222 A.D. After some days or weeks the horn was removed from Elagabalus' portrait. Elagabalus had shocked the public with bizarre behavior including cross dressing and marrying a vestal virgin. Removing the unusual horn from his portrait was probably part of a last ditch effort to show that he had changed, dropping his peculiar Syrian ways. The effort failed. On 11 March 222, Elagabalus and his mother were murdered, dragged through the streets of Rome and dumped into the Tiber.

This coin was minted in 86 A.D. The Minerva standing is a very common reverse for Domitian's denarii. Neither RIC nor RSC list a Minerva standing for Domitian with TRP VI, IMP XII, COS XII. According to the seller, this coin was once part of the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts. The reverse of the coin was reportedly damaged by an adhesive sticker which ate into the silver.

Perhaps an example of the chaos that reign at the imperial mint in 81 AD on Domitian's accession, note the unusual tailed V in AVG which may indicate a Greek celator. The Obverse is as RIC 10B, reverse as RIC 14. I haven't seen another dolphin denarius like this one.

This coin was minted some time between Domitian's seventh consulship in 80 AD and the death of Titus in 81 AD. The reverse type appears to be identical to RIC II 727 (Vespasian); BMCRE 747 (Vespasian) however, unlike this coin, the listed coin has the obverse inscription CAESAR AVG F DOMITIANVS COS VI. This coin appears therefore to be a continuation of that type after Vespasian's death with a different obverse inscription.
