S (lunate sigma)IONIA. Ephesus. Gallienus. Obv: AUT K PO LIKIN GALLIHNOC, Bust laur.; countermark. Rev: EFESIWN G NEWKORWN, Artemis seated on rock, holding patera and bow, at her shoulder quiver. Ref: SNG Cop 511; SNG Aul 1929; BMC 371; SNG München 250. CM: S (Lunate Sigma). Howgego 811 (?). Note: The lunate sigma is the Greek number 6, possibly indicating that the coin was valued at 6 assaria. Howgego notes a number of different lunate sigma countermarks, dividing them into groups partly based on how the letter is shaped. It is by no means certain that this categorisation represents different times and places of application. It is not unlikely that this countermark was applied at Ephesus, though. RV: [LEU]KAD[EwN], Emperor with szepter in quadriga to right, in the field: EN (Year 55), within dotted border. Note: The CM (ΔAK) refers to Trajan's title "Dacicus". LXV and thunderboltSyria, Seleucis and Pieria, Antiochos ad Orontem. Augustus, 27 B.C. - 14 A.C. AE-23/26 mm, 12.53 grs. AV: IMP AVG[...], Head of Augustus without laurel to right. Rectangular CM (1): thunderbolt, Howgego 472 (4 pcs); rectangular CM(2): LXV, Howgego 739 (9 pcs). SC in a laurel wreath. Note: CM(2) refers to the 15th legion ("Apollinaris), although Howgego notes that dating is complicated, as is ascertaining where it was applied. Howgego further notes that CM(1) is likely to be associated with the 12th legion ("Fulminata"), as it appears on another coin countermarked "FVLM". However, the combination of countermarks on the present coin (i.e. LXV and thunderbolt) was not known to Howgego. Had it been, he might have concluded otherwise. Collection: Mueller.Automan

Reference for this coin is RIC 486. Augustus was adopted by Julius Caesar as heir. After the assassination of Caesar, Octavian and Mark Antony fought together and won the resulting Civil War. They shared the rule of the Roman Empire. Antony's alliance with Cleopatra provoked a split with Octavian that led to a new Civil War. At the Battle of Actium (31 BC) Antony was defeated and Octavian became the sole ruler of the Empire. He was declared "Augustus" and became the proto-type emperor of Rome.1 comments

Bronze AE 30, SGIC 662, SNG Von Aulock 6117, Cohen 315,2, aVF, 12.1g, 29mm, 45o, Galatia, Tavium mint, 62 - 65 A.D.; obverse NERWNOS SEBASTOU, laureate head of Nero right; reverse POPPIAS SEBASTHS, draped bust of Poppaea right; scarce; nice green patina with sandy earthen highlights, countermarked; sold. Numismatically Important Countermark. RPC discusses three different possible mint cities for this type: Ancyra, Pessinus and Tavium. A strong argument that Tavium is the mint city is the countermark on this coin. The countermark on this type is always a laureate head of Zeus. Generally, countermarks are applied at the same place as the original mint. Of the three cities, only Tavium had a temple of Zeus and minted coins with Zeus as a standard type.

(Bacchus collection)

The oval countermark (between M & D) is Howgego 100, described as bust right. It probably depicts Elagabalus since his coins of Aegeae are plentiful (although never found countermarked). Howgego lists 11 specimens of this countermark, 1 of which on a Macrinus/Diadumenian coin. The countermark in the rectangular punch (behind D) is probably Howgego 200, of which only 3 specimens are noted. It is described as Tyche, turreted right. Two of these three listed by Howgego are of Diadumenian. Howgego lists only one coin that combins H100 and H200.

Countermark on reverse NCAP:
There are several interpretations of what this, the most interesting of all Julio-Caludian ctmk., means. The two most likely are:
1. Nero Ceasar Augustus Populi Romani
2. Nero Caesar Augustus Probavit
In the first instance it is a congiarium or public dole given by Nero to the people of Rome. In the second, it is a revalidation of the earlier coins of ones predecessors still in circulation.
Possible is also a later use, eg. by Nerva, or that no emperors name was part of the countermark, Countermark Martini Pangerl Collection 1; 20; 60 depending on subtype
