PLUTO(N), Greek HADES, god of the underworld, identified by the three-headed Cerberus. But the modius shows, that at this time Pluto was mixed up with Serapis. The Serapeion in Alexandria had shown Serapis with Cerberus too! Caracalla should have built a Serapeion on the Quirinal.

Priestly implement from l. to r.:
1. ASPERGILLUM, a whisk for sprinkling holy water. Word not used in ancient authors!
2. SIMPUVIUM, an earthen ladle, Symbol of the PONTIFICES of Rome. Often called incorrectly Simpulum!
3. GUTTURNIUM, a narrow-necked jug for small quantities of liquids
4. PATERA, a shallow bowl for pouring liquids, grain or salt upon the fire or victims. In the early times symbol of the VI VIRI EPULONES, then used by many emperors or deities without a special meaning.
5. LITUUS, a curved staff, top hooked. With this staff the AUGURES marked out the 'templum', the area to undertake observations of birds. Origin of the Bishop's Staff.

ABACUS is a misattribution! Really it is a kind of shovel with depressions on its surface, designed to pick up from a bag the correct number of coins when a distribution of money was being made, the 'largitio', largesse; here the second largesse of the emperor

This type should celebrate the arrival of the Imperial family in Rome 245. So the issue dates could be corrected.

Philip's first important task was the problem of ending the war in the East. Philip was more fortunate in his negotiations than Macrinus had been. Philip made a peace treaty with the Persian king Shapur in which Philip agreed to pay the equivalent of 50 million sesterces, and possibly an annual tribute. The treaty enabled the new emperor to travel westward to Rome.

The rev. seems to honour the Legio I Minerva. The interesting reverse legend MINER FAVTR stands for Minerva Fautrix, the favouring (partisan) Minerva. Perhaps the message is that Minerva offered Postumus wisdom, military power (note the spear and shield), and peace (note the branch) (FAC)

TROPAEUM (trophy), derived from the Greek and means a monument erected to mark the turning (trope) or defeat of an enemy in battle. It is represented in art as an upright pole with a cross piece on which is suspended a suit of armour, perhaps with captives or more booty at the foot.

produced caused by wind a frightening noise.
