It's one of my favourite coins. It's rare, but not extremely so - there is a similar coin in SNG France, Bibliotheque Nationale, 1031 (variant) - and it's not in amazingly good condition, and the proportions of Nike and the horses are a bit unusual, but it's a great design, full of movement and filling out the coin in a pleasing manner, and the little horses look as though they're having fun (in fact, I call it my "happy horses coin"). It cheers me up just to look at it!

I`m very happy with the new look, and the surface was not damaged. Maybe I`m crazy to try something like this, but at least this time I was lucky.

Comment: This is one of the most common coins in the zoo series. I have kept this lower grade coin over the years because of the excellent strike and the nice body of the horse. I’m a big fan of those ’winged horses’ – those who drew Sol’s chariot over the sky. The coin costed me about 10 dollars, and that is not a big investment for a favourite coin.

The Griffin (Greek gryphos, Persian shirdal - "lion-eagle") is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head, with upstanding ear-tufts, and wings of an eagle: as the lion was considered 'King of the Beasts' and the eagle 'King of the Air,' the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. The griffin is generally represented with four legs, wings and a beak, with eagle-like talons in place of a lion's forelegs and feathered, with equine-like ears jutting from the crown of its head. Some writers describe the tail as a serpent, in the manner of a chimera.

These coins are only known with a very crude obverse strike due to worn dies. However I really like the reverse, and that makes up for the lack of a clear obverse. Actually this specimen has a faint motif if you look closely.
Another interesting thing is the four die cracks that starts from each corner of the incuse. This tell us the kind of force that was used during the striking. Maybe this explains the state of the obverse die?
