This is the type of the Hercules Defensor reverse in Rome and, apart from the bow, the Hercules of the Di Auspices coins, very probably representing those statues at Leptis Magna. It even may have appealed to Pollenius Auspex in that connection. (Pat Lawrence)

Pick: The inscription on the wreath is certainly to be understood as a congratulation or homage to the emperors; since the coin is struck under the governor Ovinius Tertullus, so perhaps the appointment of Caracalla as Augustus can be seen as the presumption. - The designation of emperors as kyrioi is not otherwise found on European coins, but it can be found on indeterminate coins from the time of M. Aurelius on coins of Kaisareia in Cappadocia and on Alexandrians of Gallienus.

Pick: It is remarkable that with the name of Flavius Ulpianus much fewer coins of Severus are known than from Caracalla or Geta; it is probably allowed to conclude that Ulpianus has taken the administration of Moesia inferior under the three Augusti and then after the death of Severus has continued it a fairly long time under his sons.

Pick: The inscription of the wreath is surely regarded as congratulation or homage to the emperor; because the coin was struck (already) under governor Ovinius Tertullus, the reason possibly can be considered to be the nomination of Caracalla to Augustus. - The naming of the emperors as kyrioi on European coins is otherwise not known but on undefined coins from the time of Marcus Aurelius, on coins from Kaisareia in Cappadocia and on coins of Gallienus from Alexandria.

EPI means practically the same as PROC: with Dativus the location, with Accusativus the direction. There are 3 types with EPI from Tertullus for Severus and the corresponding types for Domna:
Hera: HrJ 8.14.3.3 (Severus) and HrJ 8.17.3.1 (Domna)
Tyche: HrJ 8.14.38.4/HrJ 8.14.38.6 (Severus) and HrJ 8.17.38.1 (Domna)
