Most likely minted during the period of the Third Crusade (1190-92) or later up to near 1225 or so. Hoards show that these debased deniers were issued in large numbers, and often recoined. Weights ranged from .20 to .70 grams and up to around 33% silver. The allusion to the previous fortunes of the Kingdom are represented by the Holy Sepulcher which had previously been in Latin Christian hands. wileyc

The Frankish states in Greece likely began minting sometime after 1255. Rather similar to french tournois and Venetian grossi as in the example above, and rather unlike the Byzantine types of Constantinople and Thessalonica, possibly they represent likely a coinage for the Franks who were living in the new Western capital of Morea after the fall of Constantinople in 1204. Though in the past these coins as above have been attributed to Robert of Taranto due to site finds, Malloy admits that Metcalf proposes that these imitation grossi are possibly Serbian or another Balkan power. Perhaps more evidence will be uncovered, wileyc

The billion/peace, silver deniers struck at Provins had been a common coin associated with the fairs of champagne and circulated widely through southern France and Italy. The comb on the coin represents the wool trade that flourished in that time. It is also considered a pun on the name of the region as Champagne, Champ (field) and peigne (comb).
In the 1100s, the pope spent much less time in Rome. Having moved the papacy up to Avignon in France. With the decreased pilgrimage, traffic in Rome, Roman senate started minting coins issued with the wool comb and cross design. Generally, these are poorly struck coins. Difficult to read the entire inscription. One of the significant differences is that the original coins struck in Provins I have a V above the comb where the coins from Rome have a S.

The coins of Champagne feature a type of symbolism beloved by medieval Europeans. The field (champ) of the coin features a comb (peigne) which thus visually spells the name of the county. These coins were widely circulated as a result of the fairs held in Champagne during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.Thibaut IV was the last count to issue the design, wileyc

Languedoc - COUNTY Melgueil - BISHOPS MAGUELONNE - ANONYMOUS
(XI - XII centuries)
City Maguelonne, founded by the Visigoths, was ruined by the Franks in 737. The bishops took refuge on the site Subtantion which has now disappeared. Maguelonne was raised by Bishop Arnaud (1030-1060). In 1172 the County Melgueil passed to the house of Toulouse. The privilege of manufacture belonged to the Counts of Melgueil which ruined, ceded their rights to Pope Innocent III who inféoda to Bishop William III Autignac (1204-1216) April 14, 1215. Therefore County Melgueil was in the hands of the bishops of Maguelonne. These bishops were faced with the rise of the house of Aragon, who had just come into possession of Montpellier. From 1293, Philip IV installed a workshop Sommières which was transferred to Montpellier in 1356. The bishopric was suppressed in 1536 and he settled in Montpellier.wileyc

The wool comb on the reverse references the main industry of Provins. Its place on this coin is considered a play on the name of the region (Champagne) with the field (champ) and comb, a wool comb (peigne). They were common coins in the 12th/13th cen, and circulated widely with thier associated use in the trade fairs held in the Champagne region. As a result of the trade fairs they circulated widely through southern france and Italy. Subsequently being copied by the roman mint because it was such a established type. The copies by the Roman senate however replaced the inscription with the phrase SENATUS PQR and were much more poorly struck. wileyc
