Julius Caesar~0.jpg
ROMAN IMPERATORS, Julius CaesarR5384
ROMAN IMPERATORIAL: Julius Caesar, as dictator (49-44 BC). Silver denarius (4.04 gm). Mint moving with Caesar, 48–47 BC. Female head (Clementia?) right, wearing diadem, oak wreath and pearl necklace, numeral LII (52) behind / Trophy of Gallic arms consisting of a horned helmet, shield, mail cuirass, and carnyx, axe surmounted by animal´s head to right, CAE-SAR across lower field. Crawford 452/2. Sydenham 1009. CRI 11.

The obverse type, which probably depicts Clementia (clemency), symbolizes Caesar's leniency toward defeated enemies. The LII behind her head may indicate Caesar’s age (52) when these coins were struck. The reverse symbolizes Caesar's long years of campaigning in Gaul, where he cemented his reputation as a military commander of genius.

Alfonso VIII~0.jpg
MEDIEVAL, Spain, Castile and Leon, Alfonso VIIIAlfonso VIII (November 11, 1155 – October 5, 1214), king of Castile and grandson of Alfonso VII, is a great name in Spanish history, for he led the coalition of Christian princes and foreign crusaders who broke the power of the Almohades at the battle of the Navas de Tolosa in 1212.
The gold maravedi of Alfonso VIII is a strange blend of Muslim and Christian worlds. It has a Cross surrounded by Arabic writings!

Is there anyone who can read Arabic?

Manuel 1~0.jpg
BYZANTINE, Manuel I, 1143 - 1180, AV Hyperpyron, Sear 1556A brave general but even more skillful diplomat and statesman. Impregnated with the idea of a universal Empire with passion for theological debate he was also perhaps the only chivalrous Emperor-Knight of Byzantine. He is a representitive of a new kind of Byzantine rulers that were influenced by the contact with the western crusaders. The customs kept in his court were not inspired by the traditional Byzantine opulence. He loved western customs and arranged jousting matches, even participating in them, an unusual and discomforting sight for the Byzantines.

Having distinguished himself in his father's war against the Seljuk Turks, he was nominated emperor in preference to his elder surviving brother. Endowed with a fine physique and great personal courage, he devoted himself whole-heartedly to a military career. He endeavoured to restore by force of arms the predominance of the Byzantine Empire in the Mediterranean countries, and so was involved in conflict with his neighbours on all sides.

Second Crusade
In 1144 he brought back Raymond of Antioch to his allegiance, and in the following year drove the Seljuk Turks out of Isauria. In 1147 he granted a passage through his dominions to two armies of the Second Crusade under Conrad III of Germany and Louis VII of France; but the numerous outbreaks of overt or secret hostility between the Franks and the Greeks on their line of march, for which both sides were to blame, nearly precipitated a conflict between Manuel and his guests.

SALONINA CONCORD.JPG
ROMAN EMPIRE, SALONINA. AR ANTONINIANUS of Antioch. Struck A.D.254 - 255.Obverse: CORN SALONINA AVG. Diademed and draped bust of Salonina facing right and resting on crescent.
Reverse: CONCORDIA AVG. Gallienus and Salonina standing facing each other, clasping one anothers right hands; in upper field, between figures, laurel-wreath.
RSC : 31a | Cf.VM : 9.

Cornelia Salonina was the wife of Gallienus and mother of Valerian II and Saloninus. She was created Augusta by her husband in A.D.254 and although she was a patron of philosophy little else is known about her. It is presumed that she was murdered with Gallienus in his camp outside Milan in A.D.268.

This coin was struck to celebrate her accession as Augusta.

obv: Bust of king, right
rev: Formalized Garuda standing facing with spread wings. In Brahmi:'Parama-bhagavata rajahiraja Sri Kumaragupta Mahendraditya'.

From the dealer's description/background:
"The early Gupta drachmas were derived from the earlier coins of Kshatrapas (obverse was practically unchanged, while the mountain on reverse was replaced with the image of Garuda)."

"The origins of the Guptas are shrouded in obscurity. The Chinese traveller I-tsing provides the first evidence of the Gupta kingdom in Magadha. He came to India in 672 CE and heard of 'Maharaja Sri-Gupta' who built a temple for Chinese pilgrims near Mrigasikhavana. I-tsing gives the date for this event merely as '500 years before'. This does not match with other sources and hence we can assume that I-tsing's computation was a mere guess.

The most likely date for the reign of Sri-Gupta is c. 240-280 CE His successor Ghatotkacha ruled probably from c. 280-319 CE In contrast to his successor"

From the dealer's description: As Kushan influence waned in the Ganges Valley, the Yaudheyas and other local/ tribal entities established their own states. The Yaudheya Republic was centered on Rohtak, northwest of Delhi. By the mid-3rd century, the Yaudheyas controlled and extensive territory served by three parallel issues of coinage, likely corresponding to three administrative areas. The present coin is designated "two".
