Lucius Antonius was the youngest brother of Mark Antony, and Consul in 41 BC
His coinage is rare, one type of aureus, two types of denarius
Following description taken from NAC auction 40, #617, about an other example of the same coin :
"This denarius, depicting the bare heads of Mark Antony and his youngest brother Lucius Antony, is a rare dual-portrait issue of the Imperatorial period. The family resemblance is uncanny, and one wonders if they truly looked this much alike, or if it is another case of portrait fusion, much like we observe with the dual-portrait billon tetradrachms of Antioch on which the face of the Egyptian queen Cleopatra VII takes on the square dimensions of Mark Antony. When Antony fled Rome to separate himself from Octavian and to take up his governorship in Gaul, Lucius went with him, and suffered equally from the siege of Mutina. This coin, however, was struck in a later period, when Lucius had for a second time taken up arms against Octavian in the west. Mark Antony was already in the east, and that is the region from which this coinage emanates. Since Lucius lost the ‘Perusine War’ he waged against Octavian, and was subsequently appointed to an office in Spain, where he died, it is likely that he never even saw one of his portrait coins."

Julius Caesar~0.jpg
ROMAN IMPERATORS, Julius CaesarR5384
ROMAN IMPERATORIAL: Julius Caesar, as dictator (49-44 BC). Silver denarius (4.04 gm). Mint moving with Caesar, 48–47 BC. Female head (Clementia?) right, wearing diadem, oak wreath and pearl necklace, numeral LII (52) behind / Trophy of Gallic arms consisting of a horned helmet, shield, mail cuirass, and carnyx, axe surmounted by animal´s head to right, CAE-SAR across lower field. Crawford 452/2. Sydenham 1009. CRI 11.

The obverse type, which probably depicts Clementia (clemency), symbolizes Caesar's leniency toward defeated enemies. The LII behind her head may indicate Caesar’s age (52) when these coins were struck. The reverse symbolizes Caesar's long years of campaigning in Gaul, where he cemented his reputation as a military commander of genius.

A.D.271
Early in this year Victorinus was assassinated by Attitianus, an actuarius (regimental quartermaster), reportedly for reasons of personal revenge but more likely part of an officer coup. The most likely interpretation of the evidence is that Domitianus II was involved in this officer coup and, having presumably been hailed as Emperor by some of the troops, managed to secure temporary control of one of the 'Gallic' mints. However, those forces favouring Tetricus I as the new Emperor were able to assert themselves so swiftly and decisively that Domitianus’s elevation was unlikely to have lasted more than a few days. This coin, deifying Victorinus, was struck by Tetricus I towards the end of the year.
This year too, Aurelian, the central emperor, pushed the Vandals back from Pannonia and forced them to withdraw over the Danube. He also pursued the Alamanni who had entered Lombardy, closed the passes in the Alps and encircled the invaders near Pavia. The Alamanni were destroyed and Aurelian received the title Germanicus Maximus.
Also this year, Felicissimus, financial minister of the state treasury, led an uprising of mint workers in Rome against Aurelian but he was defeated and killed on the Caelian Hill.

Struck AD 71. IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M TR P P P COS III, laureate head right / IVDAEA CAPTA, palm tree; to left, Vespasian standing right, with left foot set on helmet, holding vertical spear in right hand and cradling parazonium in left arm; to right, Jewess seated right on cuirass, propping her head on her left hand in attitude of mourning; S C in exergue.
RIC II 427; Hendin 1543 (Lyon); BMCRE 543-4; BN 498

Judaea Capta coins (also spelled Judea Capta) were a series of commemorative coins originally issued by the Roman Emperor Vespasian to celebrate the capture of Judaea and the destruction of the Jewish Second Temple by his son Titus in 70 AD during the First Jewish Revolt. There are several variants of the coinage. The reverse of the coins shows a female (representing Jerusalem?) seated right in an attitude of mourning at the base of a palm tree, with either a captive bearded male (representing Judah?) standing left, with his hands bound behind his back, or the standing figure of the victorious emperor, or the goddess Victory, with a trophy of weapons, shields, and helmets to the left.

The female figure may reflect the prophecy of Isaiah 3:8, 25-26: "For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen ... Thy men shall fall by the sword and thy mighty in the war. And her gates shall lament and mourn, and she being desolate shall sit upon the ground".

The Judaea Capta coins were struck for 25 years under Vespasian and his two sons who succeeded him as Emperor - Titus and Domitian. These commemorative coins were issued in bronze, silver and gold by mints in Rome, throughout the Roman Empire, and in Judaea itself. They were issued in every denomination, and at least 48 different types are known.

Only bronze 'Judaea Capta' coins were struck in Caesarea, in the defeated Roman province of Judea. These coins are much cruder than the Roman issues, and the inscriptions are in Greek rather than Latin. The designs feature the Goddess Nike writing on a shield, Minerva with a spear, shield, trophy and palm tree, etc. Most such coins were issued during the reign of the Emperor Domitian (81-96 AD).

Roman emperor Vespasian was most famous for building the Flavian Amphitheater, also known as the Colosseum. Like many Roman emperors, Vespasian rose in prominence because of his military skills and work ethics. Following his ten year rule, he left behind a record of restored order, stability and good government. He was succeeded by his son Titus in 79 CE, who had been sent to quell the Jewish revolt of 66-70 CE.

This coin was issued by Vespasian during the first year of his reign to announce the beginning of a new dynasty. After the chaos of the Civil War, Rome badly needed stability and Vespasian would provide it.

This has become one of my favorite coins in my collection. The toning is superb and the fine style of the portraits are to die for.
