PhilipAntioch_2.jpg
Roman Empire, Philip I antoninianus.Antioch mint, class 2. These later Philip the Arab coins from Antioch used to be poorly known, but through efforts of R. Bland and F. Ovari they have been catalogued properly. Most of the coins are minted on fairly low silver content flans and look a bit dull and grayish. This coin is one of the very few I have ever seen being of good silver. This combined with the forceful, needle-sharp portrait makes it unique. The reverse is slightly off center, but very well engraved and struck as well. RIC 75A, Bland 29.2 commentsjmuona
PhilipAntioch_I.jpg
Roman Empire, Philip I antoninianus.Antioch mint, class 1. The coins belonging to this early emission are characterized by the letters PM on the obverse. They are heavy, handsome pieces and this coin is the best of them I have ever seen - of the type or the emission! Both the engraving and the strike are perfectly executed. RIC 69.
This is a coin my friend John Lavender long ago told me to buy in spite of its price - or I would regret. Luckily I did, because I have regretted all the ones I refused...:)

Numbering among the unfortunate boy-emperors of the 3rd Century, Philip II was only about seven years old when his eponymous father hailed him Caesar early in 244. These formative years must have been traumatic for the young Caesar, as his father had come to the throne by way of a coup in Asia Minor, and upon returning to Europe he was perpetually at risk on the Danube front, where he fought hard to keep Rome's enemies at bay. Philip II held the title Caesar for slightly more than three years, during which time he had many attractive coins struck in his honour – principally silver double- denarii and brass sestertii (NAC).

"Thank you for showing this very rare coin reverse FELICITAS AVG(usti) N(ostri), Felicitas holding a long caduceus and a cornucopiae: the draped bust seen from front is unlisted in Alföldi's work on the mint of Siscia under Probus (so ref: Alföldi 32, -), I know it from another coin in a private collection, which shares the same obverse die as yours >> unreferenced coin, two specimens, one obverse die.
The new reverses introduced at that time in the Pannonian mint of Siscia celebrate Probus as "Augustus noster" (Our Emperor) as the emperor is of Pannonian extraction. The marking which omits the officina number is a clue for an issue of common base aureliani minted parallely with an imperial donativum in gold.
Very nice coin..S. Estiot" Thank you S.Estiot.

However, Alfoldy lists two examples with obverse legend IMP C PROBVS P F AVG: type 36/1 - Radiate, cuirassed bust right (specimen in Frankfurt) and type 36/2 - Radiate, cuirassed bust left (collection Missong, Vienna), in addition, another specimen of Alf 36/1 is kept in British Museum, coming from Gloucester hoard . All examples have -/-//XXIT mintmark. The same obverse is listed by Pink." by Incerum, thank you Incerum.
