Δε and star. The obverse inscription on these coins is in Latin whereas the previous coins of Antioch in the 2nd and 3rd centuries have the obverse inscription in Greek. These coins may have been minted in Laodicea.

Elagabalus: Antioch, Syria: SC with Delta Epsilon

1318c.jpg

S·C with Δε. This is a continuation of the main type struck by Macrinus, in the same single denomination (as) and with roughly the same size (18-20 mm) and weight (c.4.5 gms). The standard obverse type is laureate head right. A laureate bust right or a radiate head right occur infrequently.

Elagabalus: Antioch, Syria: SC with Delta Epsilon and eagle

1987__Saint_Paul_Antiques,_Auction_19,_lot_442.jpg

S·C with Δε and eagle. This type was also struck under Macrinus, but while scarce under Macrinus, it is the most common type under Elagabalus. Size is typically 18-20 mm and weight is about 4.5 gms. The most common obverse type is radiate head right with laureate head right being fairly common also. Left facing heads are scarce.

Elagabalus: Antioch, Syria: SC with KA

969c.jpg

S·C with KA. KA may mean "20 to 1" or a value of 1/20 denarius. Or it could be an abbreviation for the Capitolian Games. Size is about 15-17 mm and weight is about 4 gms. Usual obverse type is radiate head right.

Elagabalus: Antioch, Syria: Tyche seated

2676.jpg

These were struck in two denominations, one 32 mm (8 assaria) and 26 mm (4 assaria). Both have the reverse type of Tyche of Antioch seated with the river god Orontes swimming below. The larger coins have a ram leaping over Tyche while the smaller ones do not. The larger coins are very scarce.

In older references many of these coins were attributed to Caracalla. Some European scholars and auction houses are now thinking these could be Elagabalus. I have them all listed here under an Elagabalus album but within the coin description I have them as either Caracalla or Elagabalus if there is any doubt.
