Ancient Silver Coins

Abdera.JPG

An assortment of ancient silver coinage. Since I don't have many silver pieces I've cataloged most of them here.

Anti-Semitic Notgeld

notgeldD.JPG

These are really unbelievable. I am not an anti-Semite, I picked them up for a lesson on pre-Nazi anti-Semitism. The one I find most outrageous is the "Jew hanging from tree" type. Ask yourself, how could people actually use this as money?

Byzantine: Misc. Bronze

byzantineL_copy.jpg

Almost entirely from the same lot. The photos do not do the thick green patinas justice. Some very nice examples.

Greek: Syrian Bronze (Royal Seleukid Issues)

AAL_copy.jpg

Royal Seleukid issues from Seleukos I to Antiochos XII, although I'm trying to fill in the gaps. Most have beautiful desert patinas, which originally perked my interest.

Potamikon Collection

SileraianTetras6_86g.JPG

My favorite type of Greek coinage. For some reason the image of a man-faced bull strikes me. Perhaps it's in my blood.

See my publication (co-authored by Nicola Sisci), for more information on this iconography:

Nicholas Molinari and Nicola Sisci, Potamikon: Sinews of Acheloios. A Comprehensive Catalog of the Bronze Coinage of the Man-Faced Bull, with Essays on Origin and Identity (Oxford: Archaeopress, 2016). ISBN 978-1-78491-409-7 (hardback).

Roman: Imperial and Provincial Coinage

polllo.JPG

A scattering of Roman Imperial and Provincial coinage. Some I acquired when I first started collecting. My favorite is the AE Follis of Diocletian, the image used for the album cover.

kalasshot.JPG
Greek, Lead Sling BulletMid. 4th century BC, lead sling-bullet. Scorpion on one side, and on the other, KALA. It is most likely the genitive form of the name Kala, a general under Alexander the Great who was later appointed satrap of Phrygia. It's also been suggested that "KALA" here is used as an insult, as if saying "pretty boy" or "girly man" today.7 commentsMolinari
