AVG BRIT Denari

RICIVi-209.jpg

Commodus, Septimius Severus, Caracalla and Geta all used the title AVG BRIT for a number of their coins. I have a particular interest in Roman coinage relating to Britain and, while this is admittedly a stretch, it gives me a chance to broaden my scope while still staying somewhat within the bounds of my theme.

Rome - Mint of Londinium

VIlug-14b.jpg

After the defeat of Allectus by Constantius, Rome operated an official mint in London from c. 297 AD until its closure in 325 AD by Constantine the Great. This album contains some examples from my collection to illustrate the different types of aes that were minted in London during this period (London is not known to have minted any gold or silver for the Empire).

A collection of AR denarii issued by Septimius Severus and his sons, Caracalla and Geta, with themes that relate to their campaigns in Britain. A particular focus is the VICTORIAE BRIT series minted in 210 AD.

Notes: No this is not from London, but I believe that the unmarked, plain bust coinage of 296 was minted in Lugdunum for the specific purpose of circulating in Britain upon the invasion of Constantius. There are enough stylistic similarities to the LON coinage of 297 to make this worthy of inclusion in my London collection!
