GREEK, Ptolemaic Egypt, Ptolemy VI, 204-181 B.C
Masterpiece portrait. SNG Cop lists a simliar coin in the same year, with an owl in the left field, for the mint of Citium, Cyprus (SNG Cop 588). At Salamis, the owl was also used in the left field on a coin of the Selukid king, Antiocus IV, 170-168 B.C. Our coin is unpublished in references held by FORVM.

I gave 5 for style and technical - shame reverse not centered or a 6! Laughing

Best I ever see.

I've never been a huge fan of Ptolemaic portraiture, but this coin is a work of art!

Beautiful coin! I have been wanting to add one like it to my collection for quite some time. Great example!

Salem - Your attribution is incorrect. Wrong dates, or wrong Ptolemy. Crying or Very sad
Lloyd T   [Jan 21, 2013 at 04:13 AM]
Or both?

Probably Ptolemy IV Philopator, 221-205 with the coin itself struck 218/217 BC based on the dated reverse (LE = regnal year 5). BMC p. 62, 3 var. = Svoronos 1325.

Great coin, but the attribution not so hot - 4 stars for the File as a result - five for the coin minus one for the attribution!

Before people jump up and down about my rating, please note that we are asked to "Rate this file" in the BoT Gallery, not to rate the coin alone without regard for attribution. A BoT gallery full of incorrectly attributed material would not be much use to anyone.

The face on the reverse looks almost alive! Beautiful coin!
