Valerian I, AD 253-257
AR - Antoninianus, 20.41mm, 2.87g
Rom, AD 253
obv. IMP CP LIC VALERIANVS AVG
Bust, draped and cuirassed, radiate, r.
rev. APOLINI PROPVG
Apollo Propugnator, nude except chlamys, stg. r., holding strained bow obliquely upwards.
ref. RIC V/1, 74, pl.I, 5; C. 25; Göbl 44
VF/about VF, nice realistic portrait

The attribute PROPVGNATOR (meaning guardian, defender) for Apollo is rare. Usually it was used for Jupiter and Mars. But in these difficult times Rome needed help from everywhere.
