ROMAN IMPERATORIAL, Antony Legion VI Denarius
Rome, The Imperators
Mint traveling with Antony, ca. 31 BC
AR Denarius

Obv: ANT AVG III VIR R P C; Galley right.

Rev: LEG VI; Aquilia between two standards.

Produced by Antony in the lead-up to his final defeat at Actium by Octavianís navy (commanded by Agrippa), the legionary series was a huge issue that recognized 23 legions under Antonyís command. These coins would continue to circulate throughout the Empire for several centuries after Antonyís loss, partly because their notoriously debased silver discouraged hoarding.
