RIC 1242 Vespasian
Æ As, 9.42g
Lyon mint, 77-78 AD
Obv: IMP CAES VESPASIAN AVG COS VIII P P; Head of Vespasian, laureate, l.; globe at point of bust
Rev: VICTORIA AVGVSTI; S C in field; Victory adv. l., with wreath and palm
RIC 1242 (R). BMC -. BNC 854.
Acquired from CGB.fr, November 2021.

In 77-78 Lugdunum (modern Lyon) after a hiatus of several years struck a decently sized issue of bronze coinage, presumably to address a shortage in the Western provinces. This rare left facing portrait variant of the fairly common Victory advancing type was struck for the issue. Victory was a common theme on Vespasian's bronze issues and should be viewed in a generic context with no specific link to the Jewish War.

Missing from the BM collection.

I like the slight ghosting effect of the double strike
