PROBUS BASTIEN 312
OBVERSE: IMP C PROBVSPFAVG
REVERSE: MARS VICTOR (Mars walking right, holding tropaion; captive at foot)
BUST TYPE: B = Radiate, cuirassed bust right
FIELD / EXERGUE MARKS: -/-//-
WEIGHT 3.73g / AXIS: 12h / DIAMETER: 22,5mm
MINT: Lugdunum
RIC: 35 CORR. (RIC MENTIONS "II" MARK BUT ONLY ONE DIE EXISTS OF THIS REVERSE WITH NO MARK)
BASTIEN: 312 (4 ex. cited)
COLLECTION NO: 1499

Extremely rare and desirable variant of this otherwise popular reverse struck at Lugdunum, in which there is additionally a captive at Mars' foot. Only one reverse die of this variant with captive and no mintmarks exists - see also Bastien no. 311 (same reverse die but A2 bust) and no. 301 (aureus). This coin was evidently part of a donativa issue. A coin of the highest numismatic interest!
