BYZANTINE, John V 1341 and 1351-1352 Thessalonica
|
Obv: Bust of St. Demetrius Holding Spear and Shield
Rev: Emperor Crouching Before Christ
PCPC 284, Unlisted in Sear
(Bendall's book "A Private Collection of Late Palaeologan Coins" states that this type was possibly struck by John V in 1341/1342, before the Zealots seized Thessalonica. These crude little coins, with their military saint and submissive emperor, reflect the mixture of desperation and faith which must have pervaded the empire in its final years.)
