Nike and Prize Crown
CILICIA. Hieropolis-Castabala. Caracalla. Æ 31. Circa A.D. 200. Obv: AVTKAIMAPAVPH-ANTWNEINOC.Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right; 2 countermarks, (1) before and (2) below bust. Rev: IEPOΠOΛITONKACTABAΛEWN. Septimius Severus standing to right, clasping hands with Caracalla (?) to left. Ref: BMC -. Axis: 165°. Weight: 14.98 g. Note: Ziegler (1993:211) notes 37 coins struck for Caracalla. CM(1): Nike advancing left, holding wreath, in oval punch, 6 x 7.5 mm Howgego 260 (23 pcs). Note: The CM may refer to Macrinus' "Victoria Parthica", there also being coins issued by Macrinus with his reverse type. CM(2): Prize crown between I and E, in circular punch, 6 mm. Howgego 427v (letters in stead of torches). Note: May have been applied at time of Macrinus, when smaller coins with prize-crown reverses were issued. Collection Automan.
