Caracalla (?), head right
BITHYNIA. Nicomedia. Commodus. Æ 24. A.D. 177-192 (?). Obv: (...)VAN-TΩN(...) or similar. Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. Rev: MH(TNEΩKOPΩN), NEIK(OMHΔ) in ex., or similar. Eagle standing left, head turned back, fighting with snake; prow in ex. Ref: SNG Cop 565 for reverse for Commodus Caesar. Defacement of portrait (damnatio). Axis: 195°. Weight: 9.82 g. CM: Laureate imperial head right (Caracalla?), in circular punch, 6.5 mm. Howgego 67 (48 pcs). Note: May have been applied because Caracalla spent his birthday 4/4 215 in Nicomedia. Collection Automan.
