The Frankish states in Greece likely began minting sometime after 1255. Rather similar to french tournois and Venetian grossi as in the example above, and rather unlike the Byzantine types of Constantinople and Thessalonica, possibly they represent likely a coinage for the Franks who were living in the new Western capital of Morea after the fall of Constantinople in 1204. Though in the past these coins as above have been attributed to Robert of Taranto due to site finds, Malloy admits that Metcalf proposes that these imitation grossi are possibly Serbian or another Balkan power.
