Vespasian RIC 43
AR denarius
Rome mint, 71 AD
RIC 43 (C2), BMCRE 50, RSC 43
Obv - IMP CAES VESP AVG P M; Head of Vespasian, laureate, r.
Rev - Above AVGVR, below, TRI POT; Simpulum, sprinkler, jug, and lituus.
aVF

The most common obverse legend with this reverse type. This reverse stresses Vespasian's religious role as Pontifix Maximus, symbolized by the simpulum, sprinkler, and jug. The lituus is the symbol of the augurate.

A fairly decent coin in good shape. The flan is a bit ragged, owed no doubt to lack of the mint's quality control early in Vespasian's reign.
