Hungary. Matthias “Corvinus” (Mátyás Hunyadi in Hun.) (1458-1490). AR denar, .43 gr., 14 mm.
Obv: + MOn[ETA • M]AThIE • D • EI • G •, Two-part shield (Árpádian stripes, raven facing left with ring in its beak)
Rev: REGIS • hV—[nGA]RIE X, Patriarchal cross, n–E (privy mark) in fields.
The type was struck 1463 (per Pohl, Huszár & Unger). This privy mark was struck in Nagybánya (now Baia Mare, Romania) by Emericus Szapolyai, schatzmeister (+bursar/treasurer) (per Pohl).
Huszár/Pohl rarity rating 4. The obverse legend described in Huszár and depicted in Unger differs slightly from the legend described and depicted in Réthy. The obverse of this coin comports with Huszár and Unger, given the presence of the final G. The reverse legend is an unrecorded variant, in that it ends with an X rather than a pellet.
