ROMAN EMPIRE, Macrinus, AR Denarius
Macrinus. AD 217-218. AR Denarius (3.62 g, 11h). Struck AD 217. Laureate and draped bust right / Jupiter standing, head left, holding scepter and thunderbolt. RIC IV 2; Clay Issue 2; RSC 70. Good VF, toned.

From the Dr. Robert B. Beckett Collection.

"That's actually Clay Issue 2 not 1, and a very scarce coin: that rev. legend with P P but omitting COS is rare with all types and can't have lasted more than a couple of weeks, c. Sept. 217. No denarius like yours in the Reka Devnia hoard.

Macrinus was letting his beard grow, and it was beginning to show; in this short issue one finds a mixture of beard lengths, still short as on this denarius, but also medium and long. (Curtis Clay)"
