PROBUS MPR 284
|
OBVERSE: IMP C M AVR PROBVS AVG
REVERSE: VIRTVS AVGVSTI (Roma dressed as amazon resting on shield and holding Spear)
BUST TYPE: H2 = radiate bust left in consular robe, holding eagle-tipped sceptre (scipio)
FIELD / EXERGUE MARKS: -/-//R*E
WEIGHT 3.36g / AXIS: 8h / WIDTH 21-22mm
RIC: 235 VAR. (R*E MINTMARK UNLISTED)
J.Guillemain, MPR 284 (3 ex. cited, including 2 ex. in La Venera hoard)
Collection no. 1165
Ex M. Griffiths collection
This is only the sixth specimen of this type known to me (including the 3 cited by Guillemain)
NOTE: scarce and desirable reverse type. Although RIC describes this type as "soldier resting on shield (...)" on better preserved specimens a nude breast is clearly visible, which effectively precludes a reference to a soldier. According to S.Estiot this is a personification of Roma dressed as amazon (hence the nude breast).
