Caracalla Dupondius tooled1335 viewsSold in April 2005 by seller eden994 on German Ebay (212€!). The reverse seems okay but on the obv. the hair and radiate crown have clearly been tooled, probably the face as well.

Nero~1.jpg
Style Errors on a Fake Nero Aureus1330 viewsNero coins are well known for being of the finest style and an aureus die is probably the most important one. This fake can be detected by its poor style.

Obverse: Bust of Nero is pushed forward too much. It should be more linear in a vertical position. Also it should have a slightly more rounded appearance.

Reverse: Headdress of Jupiter is wrong. Jupiter is too compact. The lettering on the left should be more spaced out to fill the area more. On real specimens the R almost reaches the head of Jupiter. Border should have distinct beads.

Lead cast silver washed Dirham1309 viewsCast lead coin that has been silver washed - coin is very heavy and the high points are blurred or soft - silver wash is chipping off all in all a fairly poor forgery.
The coin was purchased on eBay as part of a general collection of coins and the seller was not aware that it was a forgery.

Athens "Old Style" Tetradrachm with O instead of Theta1307 viewsAt least one forger of Athens "Old Style" tets does not seem to know the second letter on the reverse is theta, not O. Some forgeries, including this one are missing the center dot. On this example the owl is also missing its tail.

Black Sea Cities cast fakes1282 viewsRecently I had opportunity to go through a group of about 60 Black Sea area bronzes (various cities of Macedon, Thrace and Moesia Inferior). The coins had a HEAVY, DARK patina with earthen encrustation. I could see that they were pretty good quality, and make out the reverse types. I selected and bought TEN coins. When I brought them home I examined them under microscope and became suspicious. Then I began the cleaning process, and this is what I found EIGHT of TEN were fake! As you can see, these are CAST forgeries, struck in a yellowish bronze very much like they are supposed to look.
The edges are filed.

OCTAVIAN Augustus bronze as M. Salvius Otho, RIC 4311263 viewsSalvius Otho, RIC 431. Wrong style, retrograde obv. legend. Modern punched letters COL TESA on the rev. at 3 o'clock . This coin was a promotion by a Spanish company called TESAFILM in the latter part of the twentieth century. This is a well-known token coin, part of a free "fantasy replicas" coin collection. "COL" is the abbreviation for the Spanish word "coleccion" (collection in English, as in coin collection).

Not Tooled - This coin is genuine and is not tooled.1210 viewsThis coin was erroneously identified as tooled on another discussion list. Here is a comment from Curtis Clay: "The untouched state of the coin is self-evident, but if you want it in concrete, you can compare the obv. to three other VF coins from the same obv. die, and all identical with yours in every detail, in Blancon List 41, 2003, 906-8. The same tooler, tooling all four in identical manner, I suppose?" The point of posting here is to point out that what might appear to be tooling for one type may be normal for another type. Before assuming a coin is tooled it should be compared with others of the same type (from the same dies if possible).

Fishy Thasos stater reverse1189 viewsOf the four coin reverses pictured here, the one in upper left is obviously different and is in fact from a forgery. Note the difference in the style of incused areas.

cogito: Three of these things are the same thing (i.e., authentic)...one these things is not the same (i.e., likely fake). Can you spot the "one thing"?

Hadrian sestertius1183 viewsThis coin was sold on ebay by known fake seller Numis18 for $3000.

A comment from Curtis Clay "no question, the coin has been brutally tooled! "

When the surfaces have been modified to this extent, it is nearly impossible to determine if the coin is genuine. It could be a tooled cast.

Green glossy MAT effect copper patina -1168 viewsOn this coin the patina gives a strong glossy effect, and the color is an identical natural green. The chemical reactions are carried out in normal enviroment and the copper carbonates and coproducts are absolutely identical to the natural types.
This kind of patina cannot be melted or washed out by solvents, such as acetone, Isopropyl alcohol, ethylic alcohol neither ether , exane or benzen.
