gordfake.jpg
Gordian I, silver denarius248 viewsSource David Garstang's website. Identified as a "probable fake" by the supplier. Lacking "dead giveaways" no visible seam or file marks around the edges. The surface not worn enough to explain the apparent wear of the portrait. Wear is probably artificial, to hide signs of casting. One almost never sees denarii of this period this badly worn. The denarius was discontinued shortly after this. These coins were not in circulation long enough to get this worn.

GordianIv4.jpg
Gordian I243 viewsLow quality tourist fake, poor style, surface cast marks, obvious edge seam & mismatched dies. The obverse shows Gordian I but not in a style that would be terribly obvious without the legend. Gordian was emperor for a very short period in 238 AD. The reverse reads TR POT XI suggesting the issuer was in his 11th year of rule.
