Fake Alexander III AV Stater - Price 2078 Miletos 85 viewsObv. Helmeted head of Athena r.
Rev. Nike standing l. holding wreath and stylis.

Weight: 8.67 grams

This stater is reverse die linked to another fake example of Price 2078 that in turn is obverse die linked to a modern fake copying Price 3423 (Arados). AV stater die transfer between mints did not occur. The obverse die was also used to press and example of Price 2114 (Miletos) which occurs later in the Miletos series. The detail of the style of the obverse and reverse is modern. It is pressed from modern dies and is reverse die linked to a series of AV stater fakes purporting to be from the same mint. This series of fakes came to market in European auction houses commencing 2003 and over the subsequent decade. Fantasy Fake Baktrian Sophytes AV Stater73 viewsPurportedly derived from the Mir Zakah II Hoard this unique coin was condemned by Francois de Callataÿ in his analysis Pourquoi le «distatère en or au portrait d’Alexandre»
est très probablement un faux moderne in Revue Numismatique 2013 (Vol. 170)

Summary – The recent publication of the proceedings of the conference held in 2007 concerning the unique gold “distater” with the portrait of Alexander the Great (Holt, BopearaCHCHi 2011), including the eagerly awaited metal analyses, combined with the appearance of a critical review of that book (BraCey 2011), invites reconsideration of the problem by adding some new arguments, classified in decreasing order of their power of conviction. Out of the 17 presented arguments, two seem to us to create an impossibility while nine others make it unlikely that the piece could be genuine. In addition, reasons are given why the gold stater of Sophytes is surely a fake.

Macedonian Kingdom, Perseus or Philip V, 187 - 168 B.C., Tetrobol - Series of Fake Dies112 viewsMacedonian Kingdom, Perseus or Philip V, 187 - 168 B.C., Tetrobol - Series of Fake Dies

Chart assembled by Lacedaemon, he wrote:

The weights of the coins seem to be in generally the right area for coins of this type, about 2.4g.

Sometime around January I gathered as many images of this type of coin as I could find to see if there were die links between them. I found links between 9 obverse dies and 10 reverse dies.

I’ll upload the die comparison image I made. I hope it makes sense to others. It’s arranged so coins with the same obverse die run horizontally and reverse dies run vertically. The coins on red backgrounds were sold by notorious fake sellers, the ones not on red backgrounds are mostly from dealers.
