Cavino - Faustina II200 viewsFaustina II (a.k.a. Faustina Junior), 147-175 AD. AE Paduan sestertius size medallion engraved by Giovanni Cavino (1500-1570), 33.57 g.
obv: FAVSTINA AVG ANTONINI AVG PII FIL draped bust r., wearing hair bound up and tied with fillet
rev: Vestals sacrificing over lighted altar before temple, S C in exe. Cf. Gnecchi Lucilla 13 and Crispina 5 (for rev. type); Klawans 2; Lawrence 59.
The medallion is a fantasy, as it imitates a reverse type of Julia Domna, found on dupondii and asses, but not as a sestertius and not for Faustina II. For the Doman type cf: f: RIC 607 [Caracalla], Cohen 234, BMC 232.
An extraordinary Renaissance era forgery; sold as such by a major house in 2010 for $2,400 US

Paduan - Otho, sestertius, cast of Panduan forgery352 viewsOthos, sestertius, not listed in RIC because this denomination does not exist for Otho. Published in Imitations and inventions of Roman Coins by Zander H. Klawans, Otho #2 & Otho #3, however, this is a cast of an original Paduan struck forgery from the 16th century. The originals are collectible, so this is a fake of a fake.
