Observations by Barry Murphy from board thread:
Fake 2 is a modern pressed version made from transfer dies. The host coin has recently appeared in a Tkalec sale in 2010 and another fake appeared in an auction as far back as 2002 (Fake 1, Peus). Obviously the host coin has been around for a while, and the dies for this fake were created prior to the sale in 2002.
On the host coin, the coin is very slightly off-center toward 1:00 on the obverse, The edge of the coin touches the top of Matidia's stephane and the letter A. The edge of this can be seen in both of the fakes as a faint line from 12:00 to 1:00.
On the host coin there are two small flan cracks on both V's in AVGVST. These cracks leave faint remnants on both the fakes in the same locations.
Both fakes show softness of detail and weakness in the letters that are not present on the host coin, a result of the transfer process.Beatus Rhenanus
