Confederate States of America147 viewsModern fake Confederate States of America AE one cent piece, dated 1862. 19.5mm
obv: CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA 1862 bust of Liberty in liberty cap, l.
rev: 1 CENT within wreath of corn, tobacco and cotton leaves with corn ears at top and cotton bale at 6 o'clock
Authentic examples of Confederate cents are all dated 1861 and are struck in copper-nickel having a silvery appearance.
Confederate coinage exists only as trial pieces which never circulated. Twelve trial Cu-Ni cents were struck in 1861 by the Philadelphia, PA jewelry firm of Bailey & Co. but the trial pieces and dies were never delivered (also four trial half dollars were struck at New Orleans; these 4 half dollars and 12 cents constitute the total output of Confederate coinage). The dies were sold in 1874 to John W. Haseltine who struck 74 pieces: 7 in AU, 12 in AR, and 55 in CU. None were struck in Cu-Ni so as to distinguish the restrikes from the dozen authentic examples.
Later restrikes were made in the 1960s from the reassembled dies, though the die cracks are clearly evident on these. Fakes abound. This specimen is a circa 1980s fake from modern dies; cast in copper.commodus

United States81 viewsFake in white metal of recent manufacture imitating a 1776 pewter "Fugio" Continental dollar of the revolutionary U.S. government.
Die matches, as well as fakes of this type from other modern dies, also exist in brass, copper, and lead and are widely sold as tourist fakes in areas associated with U. S. colonial era history.
Fakes of the type exist from the mid-19th century to the present day, most of U.S. manufacture, though since the 1990s fakes of Chinese manufacture have also appeared.
The specimen shown and die matches to it are from the first decade of the 21st century.commodus
