Kamarina, Tetradrachm, 425-405 BC75 viewsObv. quadriga driven by Athena wearing Phrygian helmet, Nike above; in ex. Ionic column, signature ExE below
Rev. head Herakles in lion's skin; text KAMAPINAION
cf. Westermark & Jenkins 143.5
The flan is not properly made. The edges are too round, the luster is not right for a struck coin, and the flan lacks the sprues that are found on these issues.
Second, concerning the obverse die (the quadriga side)... Nike's wing is not properly formed and the wreath held in Nike's hand has been strengthened to boldness not found on an original. On the horse furthest from the viewer, it's left leg is not properly formed being unusually long, bent at a weird angle, with the lower leg bone nearly as long as the upper leg bone. The right hand side of the column in the exergue is not correct. The die break outside the border of dots at 5:00 is missing. The artists signature is missing from the exergue. The border of dots is missing from before the horses to above Nike. The coin lacks depth and detail found on an original.
Lastly, the reverse. The artists signature is missing from the die, in fact the first letter of the signature, an E, has been turned into another hair in the lion's mane. There are some hairs in the lion's mane, below the first A, that are unnaturally long and not found on the originals. The N is not properly formed and the O is just a blob. Like the obverse, the coin lacks fine details, particularly in the lion's mane and Herakles' beard found on the originals.
These fakes are made from transfer dies, which explains the lack of detail, and the wrong detail which was added to the new dies that didn't appear on the host coin. It also explains why the coin appears to look like it was made from authentic dies, at least superficially.
I've had this one in my fake trays for about 10 years.
