balethas_fake_EUR8000.jpg
Calabria, Baletium39 viewsThe coinage of Baletium is extremely rare, and was minted in Calabria, Magna Grecia. This is a modern restrike which was offered as genuine by Lansky auction house on July 6, 2020. The action house refused to remove it when told it was fake. It sold for EUR 8000.Enrico Vonghia
Bastareos.jpg
Paeonia, Bastareos (ca. 400 B.C. ?), Fake - Imitating, AR Tetradrachm68 viewsThis fake seeks to imitate a very rare coin of which there are but three examples known:

KINGDOM OF PAEONIA. Bastareos (c.400 B.C.), AR Tetradrachm. Large crested helmet to right, border of dots. Rev. BAΖTAPEOΖ, a bull butting to right on ground line, border of dots (Head, Historia Numorum, p. 237; AMNG III, p. 147, 16, pl. XXXVI, 21; Svoronos, HPM, pl. XIX, 2.

Bastareos is known only from the three examples of this coin apparently in existence today. Given that one example was found with issues of Lykkeios and Patraos, it is assumed that Bastareos was a Paeonian king, or perhaps the king of neighbouring tribe, whose existence is otherwise unknown to us.

The style of this fake departs markedly from that of the three authentic examples.

bearded_panormus.jpg
Panormus, Sicily141 viewsBronze
Obv:- PANORMITAN, Head of Athena right
Rev:- Gorgon head surrounded by three legs

Quote from esnible who posted the coin:-
"I thought this fake Sicilian bronze was amusing. The forger has worked from a worn specimen, improving the chin by "restoring" a full beard.
Unfortunately, the coin depicts Athena. A beard looks out of place on her!
Later Panormus issued a similar coin with bare headed (and beardless) Augustus (RPC 641), perhaps contributing to the forger's confusion.
This coin is currently for sale on German eBay by private auction, along with at least one other fake."

Sold for over $230 in August 2006

Klopatra Thea and Antiochos VIII (120s BC)31 viewsObject: Impression from dies engraved by Carl Wilhelm Bopatra Thea and Antiochos VIII (120s BC)ecker struck in an alloy of tin and lead
Model: Silver tetradrachm of Kleopatra Thea and Antiochos VIII (120s BC)1
Period: The dies: between c. 1806 and 1830 AD; the impression: c. 1830s AD
17.28g. 27.1~29.6mm Obv: Jugate busts of Kleopatra Thea, diademed and with stephane2 and veil, and Antiochos VIII, diademed, to right; dotted border
Rev: ‘ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΗΣ ΚΛΕΟΠΑΤΡΑΣ’ curving in two lines on right (“of Queen Kleopatra”), ‘ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΑΝΤΙΟΧΟΥ’ curving in two lines on left (“of King Antiochos”); eagle standing left on prow, palm branch under far wing; control mark in left field, quasi-Seleukid date ‘ΞΠΡ’ in right field; dotted border
The reverse of this Becker’s coin is a combination of reverse designs used by Ake-Ptolemais mint and by Sidon mint. Moreover, the date ΞΠΡ is non-compatible with the numeral system which was used on Seleukid coins. It seems that Becker (or his assistant W. Zindel) mistook Ζ for Ξ, so that the correct date on his original model was probably ΖΠΡ (year 187 of the Seleukid Era, i.e. 126/5 BC).
