Bronze Coins of Septimius Severus

A Few Samples

The bronze series follows the general pattern of the Rome mint silver issues. Some years saw great numbers of bronze coins issued while others saw very few. Denominations were the sestertius (1/4 denarius), the dupondius (1/2 sestertius) and the as (1/2 dupondius). The as was struck in red copper alloy while the larger two denominations used yellow brass (orichalcum). The radiant crown on the dupondius further distinguished it from the similarly sized as. Frequently, as is the case in all three of these samples, toning and patina obscure the original color of the metal.
