Julia Domna

Alexandria Mint

The Alexandria mint denarii are presented here separated into issues as defined by Roger A. Bickford-Smith in his article 'The Imperial Mints in the East for Septimius Severus: It is Time to Begin a Thorough Reconsideration', Rivisita Italiana di Nvmismatica Vol. XCVI p.53ff. The assignments were made by me and were not checked by Mr. Bickford-Smith. If you believe I have made an error please contact me. These denarii were assigned to the mint at Alexandria by comparison of style with the Greek language tetradrachms.

Alexandria mint denarius

(Left) First Issue Denarius - Feb.-Aug. 194
(Right) Second Issue Denarius - Later 194 AD - The Pietas type was issued in the first and second issues with minor differences of devices and throne decorations.

Third Issue Denarii - 195 AD - This VENVS FELIX reverse is the only type of the third issue from Alexandria. After a short period using IVLIA DO MNAAVG (left) the obverse legend was changed to IVLIA AVGVSTA (right). The same type was issued at the Rome mint so separation can only be made on style. Syrian coins of the type use a scepter and do not show the drawing out of the drapery. This variety with the second legend is the most commonly seen Alexandria mint denarius of Julia; the first legend coin is quite rare.
