Toro Farnese Album

The twins Amphion 1 and Zethus, to avenge their mother and seize power at Thebes, tied Dirce to a bull to be dragged by the beast to death. When she was dead, they cast her dead body into the spring which is called after her. The woman standing behind the bull is Antiope 3, mother by Zeus of the twins [read the story at Amphion 1].

The sculpture is a copy from the 3rd. century AD of a Hellenistic work.
