A comrade of Galerius, Licinius was made Augustus after abdication by Diocletian and Maximianus. After Maximinus II invaded his territories, Licinius defeated him. Over the years, relations with Constantine deteriorated, ending with Licinius' defeat. Intervention by Licinius' wife, Constantine's sister, spared his life for a short time, however, he was soon executed.BB18945.
