Titus, 24 June 79 - 13 September 81 A.D., Ancient Counterfeit
|Titus|, |Titus,| |24| |June| |79| |-| |13| |September| |81| |A.D.,| |Ancient| |Counterfeit|, This is an ancient silver plated counterfeit. The copper core shows through in small areas on both the obverse and reverse. Collectors refer to these counterfeits as fouree (spelling varies), a term derived from the French word for stuffed. Many examples of ancient counterfeits exist. It must have been a highly profitable enterprise, but the penalty when caught was death. The celator that engraved these dies had skill equal to those at the mint, however the obverse legend should read, IMP TITVS CAES VESPASIAN AVG P M (the last letter is missing).
