Syracuse, Sicily, Hieron II, 275 - 215 B.C.
Hieron II seized power in 275 B.C., inaugurating 50 years of peace and prosperity in which Syracuse became one of the most renowned capitals of antiquity. He issued the so-called Lex Hieronica, later adopted by the Romans for their administration of Sicily. He enlarged the theater and built an immense altar. Under his rule lived the literary figure Theocritus and the most famous Syracusan, the natural philosopher Archimedes.GB29077. Bronze AE 20, cf.
