The obverse refers to the cult of Juno Sospita at Lanuvium, the moneyer's place of origin. Juno Sospita offered protection to women, accompanying them throughout their lives from birth to death, but especially at the times of marriage, conception and pregnancy. Juno Sospita was wore a goatskin coat and scalp headdress with horns. The reverse is a play on the moneyer's name - Taurus sounds like Thorius. Cicero described L. Thorius Balbus as a man who lived in such a manner that there was not a single pleasure, however refined or rare, that he did not enjoy.SH81727.
