Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, Ptolemy I Soter, 305 - 282 B.C.
|Ptolemaic| |Egypt|, |Ptolemaic| |Kingdom| |of| |Egypt,| |Ptolemy| |I| |Soter,| |305| |-| |282| |B.C.|, In Coins of the Ptolemaic Empire, C. Lorber writes, "This series combines a type of local significance -- Aphrodite, patroness of Cyprus -- with Ptolemy's personal badge, the eagle on thunderbolt, and names Ptolemy as issuing authority." The type has traditionally been dated to Ptolemy's satrapy, but Lorber writes, "Several factors suggest this coinage belongs after the recovery of Cyprus from Demetrius: the appearance of Ptolemy's name, the depiction of the eagle with its wings closed, and a range of denominations more consistent with Egyptian practice after Ptolemy's final currency reform."
