Metapontion, Lucania, Italy, c. 240 - 207 B.C.
|Italy|, |Metapontion,| |Lucania,| |Italy,| |c.| |240| |-| |207| |B.C.|, Metapontion was among the first cities to declare in favor of Hannibal after the battle of Cannae. The city was occupied by a Roman garrison, and it was not until after the capture of Tarentum, in 212 B.C., that they rid themselves of this force and openly supported Carthage. Hannibal then occupied Metapontum with a Carthaginian garrison, and seems to have made it one of his principal places. After the defeat at the Battle of the Metaurus, Hannibal was forced to give up this part of Italy. In 207 B.C., Hannibal evacuated all the Metapontines to save them from the vengeance of Rome. The city never recovered from this blow and was never again prominent in history. It did not, however, cease to exist; for its name is found in Pomponius Mela and Cicero describes a visit to the town.
