Abdera, Thrace (or Teos, Ionia?), c. 544 - 540 B.C.
Abdera and her colony Teos issued seated griffin types. The undivided punch and style indicate this coin is from a very early and unpublished issue. Attribution to either city is not certain. The coins of Abdera normally have the griffin seated left and the coins of Teos have the griffin seated right. This coin should be from Abdera, however, the style appears to be that of Teos. In 544 B.C. most of the residents of Teos evacuated to the mother city rather than submit to the Persians. Perhaps the dies for this coin were engraved by a refugee from Teos. If so, it may have been from the first issue from Abdera.GA80114. Silver didrachm, unpublished in major references, BMC Thrace -, BMC Ionia -, SNG Cop -, SNG Delepierre -, SNGvA -, Pozzi -, aVF, Abdera or Teos mint, weight 6.719g, maximum diameter 17.9mm, 544 - 540 B.C.; obverse griffin seated left raising right foreleg; reverse rough incuse punch without division; extremely rare; SOLD
