Abdera, Thrace (or Teos, Ionia?), c. 544 - 540 B.C.
|Abdera|, |Abdera,| |Thrace| |(or| |Teos,| |Ionia?),| |c.| |544| |-| |540| |B.C.|, Abdera and her colony Teos issued seated griffin types. The undivided punch and style indicate this coin is from a very early and unpublished issue. Attribution to either city is not certain. The coins of Abdera normally have the griffin seated left and the coins of Teos have the griffin seated right. This coin should be from Abdera, however, the style appears to be that of Teos. In 544 B.C. most of the residents of Teos evacuated to the mother city rather than submit to the Persians. Perhaps the dies for this coin were engraved by a refugee from Teos. If so, it may have been from the first issue from Abdera.
