Julia Maesa, Augusta 8 June 218 - 224 or 225 A.D., Hybrid with Julia Soamias Reverse
Interesting hybrid of a Julia Maesa obverse with a Julia Soaemias reverse (RIC 241). BMC lists a large variety of hybrids mixing obverses and reverses of Julia Domna, Julia Maesa, and Julia Soamias. Many are identified as ancient counterfeits. This particular hybrid, most likely an ancient counterfeit, is not listed.

Silver denarius, BMCRE V -, RIC IV -, reverse RIC IV Soaemias 241, F, Rome or unofficial mint, weight 2.385g, maximum diameter 17.1mm, die axis 0o, obverse IVLIA MAESA AVG, draped bust right, hair slightly waved, flat chignon at back of head; reverse VENVS CAELESTIS (heavenly Venus), Venus standing left, apple in right hand, scepter in left hand; slightly irregular flan, frosty surfaces, no indication of a base metal core; SOLD
