The Lawrence M Woolslayer Collection of
Eastern Roman and Byzantine Coins

FORVM is pleased to offer the exceptional Eastern Roman and Byzantine coins of the Lawrence M Woolslayer collection. Mr. Woolslayer's collection includes extraordinarily beautiful, very rare and museum quality coins. We hope you enjoy examining these fine coins and are able to add a few to your collection. Click on the images to see enlargements. Most of the coins in Mr. Woolslayer's collection have been authenticated by the renowned classical numismatist and author David R. Sear. His works include the most popular Byzantine coin reference, Byzantine Coins and Their Values. A detailed Certificate of Authenticy by the Ancient Coin Certification Service (A.C.C.S.) personally signed by Mr. Sear (for which Mr. Sear charges $40.00) will be provided when the individual coin listing includes, "Certificate of Authenticity issued by David R. Sear." For the A.C.C.S. certified coins below, our source for the attributions, grades, and most of the biographical and numismatic information in our descriptions below is the certificates issued by Mr. Sear.

Light-weight solidi were probably used to pay tribute to foreign powers. Most were probably immediately melted, accounting for their rarity. This coin is only the 2nd recorded specimen for the first officina.

During this period, the cross used on the reverse of gold coinage often indicated the denomination: a cross on steps for the solidus, a cross on a globe for the semissis and a simple cross for the tremissis. Ex Woolslayer collection.

"The Bulgarians, descendants of the Huns, invaded the Empire in 499, 502, and again in 517. Anastasius' response was to build yet another set of walls for Constantinopolis (its third) sometime between 499 and 507. |Focas|, |Byzantine| |Empire,| |Focas,| |23| |November| |602| |-| |5| |October| |610| |A.D.||solidus|
Focas changed the traditional plural legend VICTORIA AVGG or AVGVSTORVM to a singular form, VICTORIA AVGU (AVGU = AVGVSTI). His intent may have been to discourage a popular movement to make his son-in-law co-emperor. The N in the reverse field has been interpreted to represent indictional year 13, however Sear notes the symbol is also found on earlier varieties.

Certificate of Authenticity issued by David R. Sear.

The most likely occasion for this issue would have been Martina's coronation in 614 A.D. Based on the number of surviving specimens, production may have continued for several years. Martina was extensively featured on the copper coinage of Heraclius from c. 615 to c. 629 A.D. Rynearson identifies this type as scarce.

In 608, A.D., Heraclius the Elder, exarch of Africa, and his son (also named Heraclius) revolted against Phocas, whose regime in Constantinople had become unpopular and violent.
