Birytis, Troas, c. 350 - 250 B.C.

|Members| |Auction| |Listed|, |Birytis,| |Troas,| |c.| |350| |-| |250| |B.C.||AE| |11|
Birytis' precise location in western Asia Minor remains unknown but it probably stood either south of Troy or near Hellespont. Numismatics provides our only evidence this city existed.

The god Kabeiros is similar in appearance to Dionysos and the rites of his cult were likely similar to those of the Dionysian mysteries. The attributes of Kabeiros are a rhyton and hammer.

|Members| |Auction| |Listed|, |Byzantine| |Empire,| |Romanus| |IV| |Diogenes,| |1| |January| |1068| |-| |19| |Aug| |1071||follis|
In modern usage, the term despot means a ruler or other person who holds absolute power, typically one who exercises it in a cruel or oppressive way. The original Greek term meant simply "lord" and was the Greek equivalent to the Latin dominus. Despotes was initially used as a form of address indicating respect. It was applied to any person of rank, but in a more specific sense to God, bishops and the patriarchs, and primarily the Roman and Byzantine Emperors.
MA114382. Bronze follis, DOC III-2 8, Morrisson BnF 1, Wroth BMC 9, Ratto 2030, Sommer 54.4, SBCV 1866, F, weight 6.225 g, maximum diameter 26.4 mm, die axis 180o, Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey) mint, 1 Jan 1068 - 19 Aug 1071 A.D.; obverse bust of Christ facing, wears pallium and colobium, Gospels in both hands, dotted cross behind head, IC - XC / NI-KA (Jesus Christ Conquers) flanking in two divided lines across the field; reverse cross with X at center and globus and pellets at the end of each arm, pellets and points at base, C - R / P - Δ (Greek abbreviation: ΣTAYPΕ BOΗΘΕI PΩMANΩ ΔΕΣΠOTΗ - May the cross protect the Despot Romanus) in the angles; $30.00 (€28.20)

Tiberius, 19 August 14 - 16 March 37 A.D., Laodicea ad Lycus, Phrygia

|Laodicea| |ad| |Lycus|, |Tiberius,| |19| |August| |14| |-| |16| |March| |37| |A.D.,| |Laodicea| |ad| |Lycus,| |Phrygia||AE| |19|
BMC Phrygia and older references assign this type to Augustus. RPC I assigns it to Tiberius but notes the difficulty in determining if it is a coin of Augustus or Tiberius. It certainly looks like Augustus, but many portraits of Tiberius intentionally exaggerate his resemblance to Augustus.
MA114402. Leaded bronze AE 19, RPC I 2901; SNG Cop 550; BMC Phrygia p. 301, 138; Weber 7137; AMC I 1402; Waddington 6264; SNG Lewis 1595, F, dark patina, highlighting earthen deposits, weight 4.719 g, maximum diameter 19.4 mm, die axis 0o, Laodicea ad Lycus (near Denizli, Turkey) mint, obverse ΣEBAΣTOΣ, bare head right; reverse Zeus Laodiceus standing facing, head left, eagle in extended right hand, staff in left hand, star over pileus flanking both left and right; ΛAOΔIKEΩN downward in left; ΠYΘHΣ / ΠYΘOY (Pythes, son of Pythes [magistrate]) in two downward lines on the right; $29.52 (€27.75)

Constantine X seems to have been a weak, ineffective leader. His wife, Eudocia, had great power within the empire, and was thought by some to be "the power behind the throne." Upon the death of Constantine X, his eldest son, Michael VII was still a child, so Eudocia took over as regent.

Manfred was frequently in conflict with the Papacy and was excommunicated by three different popes.
