Smyrna, Ionia, 239 - 241 A.D.
|Smyrna|, |Smyrna,| |Ionia,| |239| |-| |241| |A.D.|, Smyrna is believed to have founded the very first cult of Nemesis. This was after their hubris resulted in the city's defeat and ruin around 575 B.C., in war with the Lydians. A distinguishing feature of the cult at Smyrna is that two Nemeses were worshiped. There are many theories about what the duality represented. Perhaps the double Nemeses were the twin mountain peaks at Smyrna, called "The Two Brothers" today. Or they were the two aspects of the goddess as punitive and stabilizing. Apparently, paired cult images were not unique to Smyrna and were widespread around Anatolia, Syria and Greece. It could be that dual images were simply intended to multiply the strength of the deity's divine station.
